Tom McManus

Thomas Patrick McManus, III (Tom) June 6, 1946 - December 17, 2021

After a decades-long fight with cancer, Tom McManus, 75, passed away on December 17, 2021 with his family at his side. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, grandchildren, sister, niece, stepmother, and many dear in-laws, cousins, and friends. Tom was a passenger planner and customer service agent with United Airlines for 36 years. It was there that he met his beloved wife, Vannie, whom he married in Riverside, CA in 1999. Together, they traveled extensively, including Greece, Hawaii, Mexico, Vietnam, Costa Rica, Australia, and more. In retirement, when mobility became more difficult for him, Tom and Vannie traded air travel for road travel, and frequently took long road trips around Western Washington and Canada (often on a mission to acquire a particular favorite food). Tom was born in Seattle on June 6, 1946 to "Cap'n Tom" and Dorothy McManus. He grew up in Seattle and Hawaii, and served in Vietnam in the U.S. Air Force. Tom was close with both of his parents throughout their lives and once ran alongside his father for the Port of Seattle Commission. Fittingly, Tom's ashes will be laid to rest near his father at Tahoma National Cemetery and at his mother's memorial tree in Snoqualmie Pass. Friends and family are invited to attend the military interment ceremony that will be held on Friday, January 21, 2022 at 10:30-11:00am at Tahoma National Cemetery (18600 SE 240th St, Kent, WA 98042). In lieu of flowers, Tom probably would have preferred you get yourself a strawberry-rhubarb pie, watch some football, and know that he misses us all as much as we miss him. May the road rise to meet you, Tommy Turtle. We will love you always. Published on January 19, 2022

Tom and I were Waskowitz counselors in 1963, and anyone who recalls his easygoing likability and engaging sense of humor can probably imagine what he brought to the experience, both for the youthful "campers" and the week's cadre of counselors.

For some reason there's no headshot of Tom in the Class of '64 annual, but a photo of him on Page 8 captures his personality perfectly.

I was good friends with Tom in junior high (Sunset). He lived on 16th S close to the airport. Spent a lot on time at his place. Great guy and nice family.  His dad was a pilot and a port commissioner.  His mom always keep us feed and happy.  I had a little crush on his younger sister, Maurine. We drifted apart in high school and then I lost track of him.

I need to do a little more research.  I found an obituary for his dad, Tom McManus Sr, on that date so that is what someone must have seen too.  Hopefully Tom is still with us.

Ron - hope you are correct that Tom is still with us and think we should do more research.  Isn't his middle initial P.?  Have known Tom since elementary school and at one point lived close to him near the airport.  Dorothy, his Mom, was wonderful to all of us.  Hung out with his sister, Moe, after high school.  Greatest smile in the world and always a delight to be around.  It's always been a puzzle why his name wasn't on p. 8 and no grad picture.

I dated Eric Anders in our senior year and his father also was a pilot and that may be how Eric and Tom became friends. At any rate I remember Eric went to see Tom and Moe and rest of family during Crhistmas break in Hawaii which is where they were living that year, which might explain "no head shot" in annual. Tom did return to Highline High School to finish his senior year sometime after that. Unfortunately I do not remember how much time Tom and his family spent in Hawaii, but I do know that his sister also returned to Highline High School that same year.

I try to be careful about posting someone in the Memory section but it looks like I made a mistake this time with Tom.  Thank you, Ron for pointing out my mistake.  The information I had was a Thomas P McManus living at the address we had for Tom, and who was related to "Captain McManus", had died in 2002.  I had remembered Tom's dad was a pilot but didn't know he had the same name as his father.

I've done some additional looking and still don't have any more information on Tom.  I am going to continue looking and I will move Tom's name out of the Memory section and back to the living section.

Tom's picture was with the obituary announcement in todays Seattle Times.  The picture looked just like him and the age would match the rest of our class.

I was so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. We we're together from Kindergarten at Sunnydale through graduation fro Highline. Tom was a great guy, always ready with that winning smile.
