Hurley DeRoin

October 11, 1946 to October 7, 2015

Hurley Eugene DeROIN, Jr.

On October 7, 2015 Hurley Eugene DeRoin Jr. passed away quietly at Swedish Medical Center. Born October 11, 1946, he grew up in Burien, Washington where he attended St. Francis of Assisi grade School. At Highline High School, Hurley lettered in both swimming and golf and graduated in 1964. He went on to play golf for Seattle University where he lettered and received his Bachelor's Degree in 1968. Always an engaging individual, he was well liked and popular around campus. During his life, he was a high school educator, physical fitness instructor, became an insurance salesman and later devoted considerable time to an acting career. Hurley lost his dad in 1993 and then devoted the next 8 years to taking care of his mother until she passed away in 2000. Being the only son of Hurley DeRoin Sr and Honey Matthews and with no other family around, life took a hard course for him during his remaining years. He was always proud of his Native American heritage and it is too bad that his health did not allow him to travel to the Iowa-Kansas reservation to discover that portion of his roots. Hurley was laid to rest next to his parents at Acacia Memorial Park. May God grant him peace.

I got to know Hurley in our Sophomore math class when we studied and competed for grades together.  He was a good competor in swim team also.  Hurley had a great sense of ironic humor and took the good-natured ribbing about his father by giving as good as he got.  RIP,  Hurley.

I remember Hurley as a good athlete, quick with a smile, and willing to help explain class questions. His dedication to caring for his parents speaks well of him.  I am saddened to know that he did not have support of extended family or friends that so many of us have been blessed with.

Hurley and I attended Saint Francis grade school together and was thought of as a handsom boy. His mother ran a convelesence home and he was always on his own. I had compassion he didn't have brothers and sisters to hang with like I did. He seemed on his own. Blessings to him and glad he got the years he did to fullfill his life. Blessings to him for taking care of his mom and being the man he was raised to be. God bless him on his next journey to paradise and peace. Peace be with him now and always. Ann Keane

I knew Hurley mostly from our junior year. We walked the halls at highline for awhile.  He was always a polite and funny person.  He had great morals and was always thinking of others and how they felt.  I was sure he would have a big family, I am sorry he ended up along.  Sounds like he was always taking care of others.

I knew Hurley from St. Francis. My memory of those days is a little foggy, but I recall Hurley was sort of the class clown, always trying to make classmates laugh. I didn't know him well, but have good memories of Hurley. Recall the big 1956 Chrysler Station Wagon his dad drove and picked Hurley up at school in.

Remember Hurley was injured fairly seriously in a sledding accident in grade school. One of the nuns used to get Hurley's name mixed up with that of one her former students, Hudley Doine, so she was always calling him Hudley!

Last saw Hurley at the 1990 St Francis Reuion at Charlie (Larry) Brown's place on Bainbridge. I have a group photo I took at that reunion which I'll post here. Might be a while......

Sorry to hear you've passed on Hurley!  RIP
