Tom,
I looked at the User Forums area and agree that it could be utilized more often for posting topics of interest to open discussion posters and followers. The problem with formats of that type are placing every discussion topic input into a subject category slot or a dedicated, "file of subject matter messages", so to speak.
I think the existing categorization style in User Forums would stifle some of the spontaneity of open discussion topics. The format would also require followers to work through a maze of titles and discussion subset files under each topic to read posted discussions of interest. This is probably the reason that the Users Forums function is less frequently used by our classmates than the Message Forum.
User Forums could become a repository for archiving popular subject entries from an Open Discussions Forum or the Message Forum. This itemized format works best with a short alphabetic topic list set of hotlinks provided on a home page index (like the one to the left of this page.) If you don't provide a search engine on the website, then subjects can get too parsed out and the user access index too complex and lengthy. How would we transition the existing entries over to that format -- say the Cosmology discussions, and how would the topic areas be maintained by the participants?
Would there be an automated "house cleaning" of topic files that are no longer frequently accessed to keep website data storage requirements at a reasonable level? There might be an access counter on the forum topic portals to assess the popularity of a topic area by classmates (and decide if subject matter posts have lost their usefullness to the users and therefore should be deleted.) A posted comment or discussion set date helps to identify potentially dead topics. All of these features are used on other non-profit organization websites that I fequently visit as a member or visitor.
If this site becomes a platform for classmate solicitations and social topic avoidance complainers, then I will no longer participate in the adult exchange of ideas and discussions here in the forum. As I said, I agree that messages should be held at a reasonable length, and I was a major offender of the long length posts.
Merry Christmas to all of our classmates. Spread the love. It is a world-wide celebration of peace and joy for all people of good will. Cheers.
